I would argue that the bigger factor has been the removal of risk in conventional ag. In the days that you could pay for a farm with 3 crops, you could also be starving broke after 3 bad years and plenty of guys did. With crop insurance and gov handouts, it takes real skill to go broke today. In the old days, if you broke your leg your crops might rot in the field if you didn't have a brother or uncle or son who could step in. Today there are 10 guys within a stones throw with enough excess capacity to take your crops out and they will do it at a discount hoping they might get to rent it at some point. In the old days you were physically incapable of running a farm after 60 because the work was just too hard. Today you can hire the dealer to hook your planter up and switch the heads on the combine and hire the coop to handle fertilizer spray and hauling so there is no reason to stop.
