Subject: Lets Talk About Feeding Cows in Feedlots

Missouri

Lots of rumblings about feedlot pens being full of Cows.  I would be interested in learning if this is actually a market change due to the low feeder supply there high cost.  With feed cost low and abundant feed available.  I can see some room for reason to feed additional cows in a lot operation.

What gets me are these cow destine to the White Fat Market which we have always had in the industry?

Are they running bulls with these cows and potentially a modified confinement program?

Will these cows show up as Rebreeds?  Big industry itself  but, I always seen use grass pasture program.

What happens to the calves from the lot cows?   Even with heifer's in a lot pen riders make good cash on the bottle babies.

What condition cows and age go into lots.  And are the lots sorted by condition and age so they market out at same time?

I would assume the lots direct market to plants via contracts or buyers would this be effecting the true slaughter price for cows at our local marketers.

Along the same thinking how is the buying of cows to feed affecting the price of kill cows direct to slaughter or are the buyer even still buying for the plants?

While I ask lots of questions feel free to reply to an individual question if you have thoughts and knowledge.  Really just trying to learn myself and generate a little interesting discussion.

Thanks, the answer to the above questions could lead to the direction and lasting period of our current High Prices.  I have mixed op pinions on that and curious if we have had a major market shift of if it's just our normal White Fat Cow with little modification.

One thing that has me asking more questions is that a segment of our industry of AI Breeding Heifers in lots has gained popularity.  Makes it easy to sell a 1200# heifer for high dollars over pasture raised 990# .  Similar could be with the cows in the lots. Trying to identify if they really will end up hanging of the rail after feeding period.
