Iowa | I've had the same observations and thoughts.
There is a youtube channel called mnbricks that I watch and find interesting. The man finds old building sites that often times had very lavish homes/ barns/ silos for their time and gives the history on them. There are several stories of wealthy families that made their fortune in some other line of work such as oil/mfg./etc. and then bought farm land and built the show places.
I guess my point is this idea of people wanting to be a farmer/own land whether there is money or not in it has been going on for a long time to some extent.
