Pittsburg, Kansas | We just kept getting better at farming but poorer at returns. And it wasn't any single big thing. Just creeped up on us over quite a few years.
Wife and I could have came out of semi retirement, cut some costs, and kept going. But why???
I had become very accustomed to being lazy, riding my motorcycles or scuba diving whenever or wherever I wanted. Going back to the daily grind of managing and laboring on a farm just didn't appeal to me anymore. And it was my wife's dream only because it was my dream. She had no problem whatsoever doing other things.
So I did a spreadsheet with "poor case" projections to see if we had enough to retire in our current lifestyle, and we did. So we did.
Never wanted to do anything but farm and run a farm equipment business (did that for 7 years while farming). Was a great time. Figured I did 49 crops "on my own". Thought about going another year...... Naaaaaa
