Pittsburg, Kansas | Another big reason is some people just want to be their own boss. Live their lives on their own terms instead of punching a clock.
We grew contract turkeys for 15 years. We were an exception to the usual growers. We did it as an expansion to our row crop farm because we couldn't rent enough ground (at that time. Once we started growing turkey's all of a sudden we were offered a lot of ground to rent).
But I would say 90% of the growers had an off farm job they hated. Always wanted to farm. Just never had the opportunity. By building a contract growing turkey operation the working guy could put his house up for collateral and with zero cash borrow the entire amount and be in positive cash flow position, quit the job and be full time farming. Fulfilling their dream in a single year.
And it worked. Nobody got rich, but they were able to make a decent living and get out of the job they only went to because they had to earn a living. Worked for a lot of people I got to know through the growers association. | |
