Midwest | That's my experience, too, in the 1980's. Quite a few Massey combines, 760's seemed to be the preferred model, but a few 850's around, too. The few custom cutters that came around each fall all seemed to have Massey combines, too. Very few Massey tractors, though.
The only implement dealer left in the small town I grew up in was a Massey dealer; I think that may have had something to do with it as parts availability was still a thing back then before mail-order and the internet. The bigger farmer I worked for ran a 760; the local dealer usually had any part we needed in stock about 75% of the time. If we really needed to get up and running fast we could make a 50 mile or so drive to one of the largest parts stocking Massey dealers in the midwest and I can't remember them ever not having a part we needed.
My boss had been running a 510; he wanted to upgrade to a Deere 7700 and thought he had one bought but it was sold out from under him so he stayed with Massey. He did buy a 9500 a couple of years after I moved away. | |
