Subject: Manual but improved

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I installed one of those spring loaded valves that are used on truck air systems on my shop air compressor. The original was a quarter turn valve way on the bottom of the tank. Since my air compressor has a vertical tank, this valve was right down on the concrete floor in my utility room. In my old age, its difficult to get down and back up from that position.

The spring load valve has a small cable on it so I can pull on it while standing or sitting on a chair. It is not automatic in any sense but allows me to sit down while I pull on the cable. I still need to remember to do it though. Its not the complete answer but a bit easier than having to get down on the floor to turn the original valve.

I guess another approach that might have worked out better would have been to put a section of hose between the bottom of the tank and the original valve. This could be hung on a nail beside the air compressor. I could then open the valve, drop the hose to the floor and walk away. Once it stopped draining I could pick up the hose, turn the valve back off and hang it back on the nail for next time. Still not automatic but probably faster than my spring loaded valve.

I had the bright idea of plumbing in a chamber in the air line around my shop. I felt that moisture would collect in the chamber which I could drain occasionally. Apparently it is not low enough compared to the air compressor tank since I never get any moisture out of my chamber. If my air compressor was up in my loft, that plan may have worked out better.
