SW Iowa | I have drank heavy most of my life. As in every day. Always functioned and never missed work. But I carried a cooler of beer and whiskey in my truck to work. Never drank on the job, but went to the lake after work and drank a few before thw trip home. All 20 minutes of the drive. Got on the back roads towards home and had a couple more beers. Got lucky and never had a DUI.
Then my legs got really bad and retired at age 66. No hobbies that my body allowed. Woke up in the morning and had an orange juice and 3 fingers vodka for breakfast. Coke with like amount of whiskey for dessert. Had our county public heath come twice per week to clean, get my groceries and mail. Gave the ladies a work out for sure. Made them carry in three 3 packs of beer every week. (Ice beer-the strong stuff) Plus a big bottle of whiskey and vodka. A few groceries and mixers too. LOL
I walk really bad and terrible balance as well. Add that to the alcohol and I fell one day. Could not get up and had to press my life alert. Got hauled to the hospital and had all sorts of things out of whack. Stayed there a couple days and then a nursing home for a month. That sobered me up. Had halucinations and could not think straight from alcohol withdrawal. Still hard thinking back, what was real or I was dreaming up. My legs were weak and had to do physical therapy. Finally got strong enough to use a walker and get around. Then they prepared to send me home. I'm a single old man and live alone.
They wanted to set me up with AA meetings. I refused and have never been to one yet. Told them the last thing I need to do is go and hang around a bunch of drunks. LOL I'm a hard headed old man and have not had a drink since Oct 14, 2024.
I know one beer would put me back to where I was. My prayers are sent to the OP that he can dry up and get there too. I hear AA works quite well for lots of folks. | |
