So we use shoulder brands to tell age of our breeding bulls. Our one association started it years ago so everyone in valley and around could tell at a glance if the bull was too old to run. We use a zero then a single number for the year. So this year would have a zero and six under it.

State brand dept. has reserved the right shoulder for those year numbers we use. No other number brand can be branded and reordered for that position on a bovine. Lots of brands are just a single digit brand. My wife's family started out ranching in late 1800's here. They had the simple zero brand on the ribs. However they lost it, when my wife's grandfather forgot to re-register it sometime in the 30's or 40's. One other ranch that started in that same time frame next to ours started out with just a using a running iron. It was a line over the left hip to the right hip. So brand is on both sides of the cow. Call it the bar over the hip. Only brand that I know is registered on both sides of cow but is a single brand. The family jokes that the patriarch of the family that started the ranch couldn't build a brand so just used a running iron.
