I've always done it with a powder torch, which heats the parts and then applies the powder. Basically what you are doing is brazing carbide powder onto the surface of the part. If you don't have a powder torch you MIGHT be able to heat the bolt, stick it in the powder, and then heat it again to melt the powder in.
