Subject: Winter grazing milo after hairy vetch ?

Northeast Missouri

I have a good stand of hairy vetch on 20 acres, fenced and with access to water.

Today's crazy idea (don't worry, I'll likely have a different one tomorrow) is to let the vetch grow 'til about June 1, roll it down, then plant milo into it (or should that be plant milo first, then roll it down?)  I plan to let the milo grow to maturity and winter graze it in small batches using a hotwire that I move as needed.

All of that ought to work I think, but the vetch should likely have some mature seed when I terminate it. Is there any risk of vetch toxicosis by the time I turn in on the milo--probably in December? I assume the vetch should be decayed down flat on the ground by then & the cows ought not eat much of it, but I don't have any experience with vetch used that way.

I don't *think* I'm concerned with the vetch reseeding itself. I'm OK if it reseeds...unless new vetch growth coming up in the milo could possibly have enough mature seed to cause a toxicity problem.
