Mohawk Indiana | I was born in 1959
During the winter of’61-‘62 my Dad and Uncle spent most of their time hauling corn from our County’s government bin site about 2 miles to the nearest elevator to be loaded on rail cars to I assume was being exported.
My uncle was hauling with his 1946 K-5 International, Dad was hauling with his new to him Farmall Super M-TA pulling 2 flat bed wagons I can just barely remember Mom taking lunch to them and Dad getting in the car to warm up. They were getting paid 2 cents a bushel and were cleaning the bins out. There were several other guys hauling also. They had a 6 inch gas powered auger.
After I grew up Dad told me that when Kennedy was elected that there was a policy change. After all of the scarcity of WW2 a big government held surplus was a good thing but it always held a pretty strong ceiling on prices.
The new policy was to sell the surplus at world price and take the proceeds to finance the Farm program.
In the late summer of’62 My uncle bought a brand new C-60 Chevy 2 ton truck with a hoist and Dad bought a brand new 3/4 ton Chevy pickup. They shared them because they didn’t each need to own both. Imagine anyone doing that in this day and age!
So yes there was a change in policy at that time.
