Around here the state sales tax people frown on cash payments and require scrap sellers to present a Driver's license w/photo ID. They added a new requirement that anyone selling copper scrap has to buy an annual permit ($200). I bet that new requirement has the meth heads quivering in their sandals. Ours does, but still requires a DL. No idea on copper, haven’t sold any for a while. Annual copper permit is $270 with administrative fees and background application in MN. I just got mine. Good for one calendar year. Lapse fee is $550 if you forget to renew it immediately before your current expires. If you are a General Contractor with a current GC license, Plumber or Electrician no need for the license. But said person has to be present for the transaction. I have plenty of buddies in the "trades" but none of them want to ride to the scrap yard for an hour to turn in $200 in copper at a crack. Especially when HVAC rate is currently $175 and electricians are $140 in our area. And there in lies the problem. Copper prices are really low here ($3/lb) vs neighboring areas that are close to $5/lb. I can drive two hours into SD and they would gladly take my copper. |
