Seymour, IL | The data and information that is gathered is used by more than just producers...
yes, the WASDE and price reaction hurt any that were storing crops, and believing that a positive price response would follow the report (I was one of those)...
But I think the idea that only the producer should have access to the data is misguided at best.... and not sure how you control it.
As has been pointed out previously, just because conditions 'locally' do not align with wider area reporting does not mean the reports are wrong?
What if the farm is rented and the owner supports reporting?
Why should (potential) end users not have access to data to plan for needs (or take advantage of a pricing opportunity) As producers, we try to do the same with petroleum products for example.
The report had unexpected results for some... and has had some adverse effects. It does not mean the report is wrong, or data was collected by nefarious means.
as an aside, there are numerous ways to collect and analyze data (such as NDVI and other aerial platforms) that are by definition public (same as taking a picture from a street)... and while you may be able to opt out of singular data selection, as an industry I don't think we can (or should).
Too many are trying to make USDA the villain here, and I don't think that is the case.
Just offering another view in the discussion.
