So you have 900 cows and 30 bulls, correct?
Split them into 3 groups of 300 for timed AI. Then took 100 head from each group so you had 100 early, 100 mid and 100 late together in a pen with 10 bulls?
So, if you had 60% AI conception in every group AND managed to split the opens evenly from every group you would have 40 early, 40 mid and 40 late for those 10 bulls to breed. Sounds good but what happens if you some how group mostly (or God forbid, all) AI breds with other AI breds and opens with opens?
Even though it is quite unlikely to happen, with 60% AI conception on the whole herd you could possibly end up with 300 open cows grouped together with 10 bulls.
Timed AI can be a great tool to create uniform calves but I've also seen it turn into a disaster when only 25% of the herd gets bred by the AI straws. Its hard to have enough bull power available for that scenario.
