West Chazy, New York | The problem comes when a dry cow has excess calcium and with that comes a diminishing ability to pull calcium out of her reserves on short notice when lactation begins, sort of a case of getting soft from living too easy. With dairy cows the typical regimen is to feed only the minimum of calcium during the two month dry period and feed high levels during lactation. Cows have an impressive ability to "bank" some nutrients and use them during peak milk production. Bedf cows don't milk enough to get into those situations very often. That said, you probably don't want to feed alfalfa as the only forage to dry cows, but a few pounds shouldn't hurt | |
