Subject: RE: Bank Barn Question

northeastern Ohio
I love my old bank barns and still use many of them. But there comes a time when they are beyond repair. Roof and siding are fairly easy and don't cost much if you do the work yourself. But foundation work is expensive. And insect damage can do significant damage to main timbers.

And that is the situation I found myself in here at my home place. Big beautiful barn on the outside, but foundation issues, wind damage, and insect damage took it down. It would have cost $50k to redo the foundation and probably that much in labor to redo the timbers that the powder post beetles had destroyed.

I chose to build a 60x100 to replace it. Poured foundation with wet set post brackets to build a drive thu "pole" building with no poles in the ground. Total cost was around $100k in 2021. Wow! So much nicer to put hay in there and temporary storage of equipment. Don't have to worry about going through the floor. Can turn a skid loader around without ripping up boards.
