 East of Broken Bow | The low cost guy doesn't have to have the most acres, he could also be the one who just makes the most of his acres.
Around here, we have row crop fields, as well as pasture land. Historically, the people who most consistently make a profit (maybe not the big home runs that some do, but I mean consistent year to year profits) by keeping costs down don't have the most acres, they make the most of their acres.
They put cows out to graze their cornstalks. The cows eat enough of the stalks to often save a pass with a shredder, while at the same time feeding the cows for a month or two saving on feed costs on the cattle. The cattle also provide 'some' fertilizer to the field, saving costs there, as well. Getting dual use out of your acres is almost like being able to add acres, without having to add acres. | |
