Eastern NE KS | Today, my bull battery (4hd) are all home raised but ai sired. I take my pick out of 10 or so contemporaries. Lacock has it right. One can produce bulls for in herd use more economically than the market suggests. I do sell the contemporaries to my neighbors at attractive prices. I have many repeat buyers so that builds confidence in the process.
20 years ago my bull budget was up to $10k for a bull. That is challenging to sustain when selling steer calves for under $1k at the time. That realization triggered the home raised process. It is largely working for me.
