I would say random problems will turn into a constant non function, and then you can troubleshoot it easier. ARE you saying that the startup purge /vent motor doesn't go when you turn up the thermostat? If its getting signal from the T-stat like it is supposed to, its likely the board is bad if that is the case. Or the circuit breaker. CHECK to see if the signal gets from the thermostat to the furnace by jumping the 2 wires at the furnace input screws or connectors to test that the thermostat isnt the cause.
Now there should be some flashing lights in there on the circuit board that tell you a code......What does that CODE flash tell you? Count the flashes
>>Count the flashes when it is not working and see what it ways. There should be a code reader instruction sticker inside that cover.
Check for disruption in the exhaust pipe. A rusted vent or a birds nest will give troubles. A spider web in the vent purge hose will give troubles as well. Low gas pressure at the regulator or mis adjustment / malfunction at the heater adjustment valve for the gas pressure will also give the fits.
