SW MN | I use a wide piece of chalk from the sidewalk chalk sticks that my kids used when they were little.
By the way, this is a very accurate way to set toe-in/out, as long as you always set the height of the measuring bar to the centerline height of the tire. Scribing the line on the tire cancels out any tire/wheel runout. I typically repeat the measurement to be sure that the bar didn't get bumped in the process of moving it from behind the tires to the front. I also do a little math to be sure the measurement accounts for different tire diameters, but in the end the error is fairly small on car and SUV sized tires.
I also don't have a nice set of slider plates like the ones shown in the photos. Instead, I turn the steering wheel back a forth a bit several times after setting the front end down from the jack. This allows the tires to slide out to get the ride height settled.
