I'm not saying it is better nor am I trying to start a debate war. But there is an alternative to direct subsidies. It's supply management; match production with demand. It isn't perfect and creates new problems. And it leads to some of the same problems that cutting off subsidies would create, i.e reduced number of farms. But it sure as heck is cheaper for taxpayers when they don't have to bail out an entire sector every year.
