Subject: Ag Leader electric clutches for planters

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I'm not familiar with the the 20/20 but Ag Leader planter clutches like most brands, operate on the principle that electricity is used to STOP planting. Part of the idea is that if the system should fail, then planting will still take place assuming a ground driven machine.

Although the Ag Leader clutches were designed to be controlled by an Ag Leader system, they can be operated by any other system (even a manual switch box) that applies 12V to the clutches to disengage them. There are a few planters (such as Great Plains, I think) that use electricity to engage the clutches so then a reversing relay is needed but this doesn't apply to you.

In other words, if you disconnect the wiring at a clutch and turn the seed shaft with a wrench, that planting unit or section should turn and dispense seed.

This is the opposite logic compared to a spray system where electricity is used to open the spray valve to spray. This reverse logic can confuse a person if they are not aware of it.

Each clutch could be tested by disconnecting it from its harness and using a loose 12V battery. With the battery disconnected, the clutch should remain engaged. With the battery connected, the clutch should disengage. Some clutch styles are polarity sensitive and damage might occur if connected with the opposite polarity. With Ag Leader Pin A is 12V and Pin B is ground.
