Subject: how to keep mice out of small engines?

Good morning all,
How do you all keep mice from getting inside the engine shrouds on Honda engines? I've got a pump that sits back by a tree row and have continual trouble with this. I've fixed the shutoff switch wire more times than I care to know, and the other day there was a nest in there and we managed to get blood and guts everywhere inside the shroud.
What's everyone else do to keep the little critters out?
Thanks in advance...

ETA- I've sometimes put a cover over the small engines that sit outside, but it seems like the mice problem is worse than ever then.
