If you are 10 bu/1000 seeds you will more than likely benefit from more population. Since every year is different, you need to do some long term test blocks to dial in what is best for your area.

Pretty good advice overall but I'd make the window 7-10 bu per 1000 seeds dropped.     If you're not getting over 7 bu per 1000 plants population is unlikely to be the limiting factor (there's a point where more plants actually hurt yield potential) and if you're getting over 10 bu/1000 you need more seed out there.

Some hybrids respond differently to population but in general 7-10 is a pretty good window.   5 bu/1000 would indicate 40k seeds and 200 bpa as being acceptable.  To me, that's a lot of wasted money on seed.

As I said depending on area. I am 100 miles north of you and i work with some farmers growing corn 300 miles further north. Farther north we need more seeds to get yield. Trust me the areas that are at 5 bu/1000 are not 200 bu/ac areas more like sub 100 bu/ac. I seed for 6-7 and sometimes get 10+ if conditions are right. Fixed vs high flex ear varieties also make a difference.
