I haven't been around much if any irrigation but those pivots would be convenient but very costly. If you don't have to irrigate to maintain water rights, just do dryland alfalfa with no water or water with your spinklers once in the spring but with lots of water. This isn't good advice if you are in an arid area or have sandy soil.
