Southeast Colorado | I enjoyed the story, but will throw my 2 pennies in fwiw (surely less than one penny).
I think all know that long term if the govt would get out of the farm subsidy business, that farming economics would get better. However, the primary way that would happen would be by there being far less farmers. And unfortunately that would be extremely unfair to the folks who are primarily "newish" in the business. They will have entered at a time of bloated costs, due to those govt subsidies. They will have not had time to build equity, so will have extreme difficulty surviving that 10 to 15 year transition period mentioned in the above story about New Zealand.
Do I believe that because of that, we need to continue to subsidize forever?? Of course not. Just be aware that the boomers would probably be all over a plan that would ultimately break those who came behind them. Except for their immediate descendants of course. (Disclaimer.....I realize not every single person fits in their assigned box)
I could be in favor of a progressive phasing out of support. But let's do it like "Freedom to Farm" was intended. Just not anywhere close to how it actually played out. I should probably also add that Freedom to Farm probably actually did play out as intended. I was/am too naive to appreciate it all.
