Reality speaks....I think about this a lot as farmland gets more & more higher than it returns...or even grosses
I know of a couple of instances were guys sold 10% of their inflated land base and are debt free now...Did they want to sell land,no ....but land payments on recent purchases was sucking their spare cash...They could have kept paying for it and been ok but getting older too. I have what I refer too as a “sleep quotient”. How well do you rest at night when debt is always in the back of your mind? There have been many instances in my career where I’ve recommended my client sell an 80 to get his debt load down. Even better if it can eliminate a payment or two. The payments are what keeps guys awake at night. And the inability too make them, swallow a bullet. Our agency has paid out more farmer suicide claims than I care to admit over the years. It still was not enough relief for one, he ended up taking his own life. Tragic.
