Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I had something along this line happen to me but the car was parked in my yard. It had been sitting for several days. When I tried to start the car, a message appeared indicating that I must have left something "ON" and the system had shut everything down to save the battery. This didn't cause me any problem and probably saved me from having to jump start it.
If the party in the story would have had their FOB, it could have been used as usual or a worst case scenario they could have removed the key from inside the FOB and used it. Of course with the FOB inside the car that key was not available. I keep my spare FOB in my home office since I usually don't travel far from home. Worst case scenario someone might need to bring it to me.
