Winamac, Indiana | Aside from going to high speed the best planter upgrades I’ve seen in my short farming career are going from a piston pump to a hydraulic driven pump and going from active air downforce to hydraulic downforce. Variable rate seed is a must for us but we can be anywhere from 18k-38k in a 60 acre field with how variable our soils are. I’m not sold on VRT on our starter since we come back with similar mix with sidedress but the hydraulic pump left the field a lot more uniform compared to seeing streaks from the thumper piston pumps. For what you can find used planters for anymore it sounds like you might be able to find something exactly what you want for less than you’d have into retrofitting yours
