Yes my memory was you let off gas pedal and then OD engaged until you stomped down on pedal..
Two different OD operations:
1. Gearing engaged, so transmission's input/out shafts are in sync with engine RPM.
2. In neutral.....aka "Georgia Overdrive" where transmission is in neutral.
Most stick/auto transmissions use item one method, but a few used item 2 method.
Here are two examples when a "Goergia Overdrive" stick transmission is used:
1958-1960 Rambler American
Further proof of the American's exceptional fuel economy came when an overdrive-equipped car driven coast to coast under NASCAR's watchful eyes averaged 38.9 mpg. However, the most astounding demonstration was the record set in the Pure Oil Economy Trials, another NASCAR-supervised event: 51.281 mpg, which AMC sagely noted, "No car owner should expect to approach in everyday driving."
