Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | OK, apparently they use a wired approach. This would require using a charging/data type cable. Some cheaper cables only have the power and ground wire in them which is suitable for powering or charging a device such as a phone, tablet or other lower powered gadget.
Transferring pictures, video or other information between two devices can be done with a wired or wireless approach. If the wired approach is used, the cable must be the charging/data type which would have the extra wires in it.
If a wireless arrangement is being used then then a charging only cable would be sufficient.
Through history the speed and abilities of the USB arrangement have evolved. The current USB-C type cobles can have more features and speed. When the standards were set the designers did their best to make the newer styles backwards compatible with what's out there. It is my understanding that Europe mandated the use of a standard between various brands which forced Apple to switch from their own lightning connectors to the USB-C style.
Sounds as if this is working fine when using an older iPad with the lightning connector or a newer iPad with a USB-C connector to a 20/20.
