| We don't bother to variable bean planting, our base rate gives us excellent ROI by itself.
For corn, we based our original polys on soil type. From there we used what we know about the ground, yield and soil aph/yield potential ro make our original rate maps.
From there my wife, our office bookkeeper, and myself all talk about what we see as we harvest, each of us comparing notes as we harvest. The 3 of us run the combine and carts. We've been harvesting the fields together for several years now, so we generally know what to expect where we are in each field.
From there we have ideas of where/how to fine tune the polys and rates the following spring.
It's worked very well for us, we're changing less and less each year and have seen the areas we variable rate improve yield and especially an improved seed ROI.
