| While I generally agree with what you said, there is a line somewhere between teaching kids to say please and thank you out of genuine gratefulness and forcing kids to say things like that to bow and genuflect in forced acts of false "respect" to elders who are wholly undeserving of it.
Many people are worthy of genuine thank you's, some really aren't. Teaching kids to show unquestionable "respect" to elders is how tyrants and pedophiles navigate unscathed. I am teaching my children to listen to their guts. I would much rather have them be thought of as ungrateful little sh_ts by elders who might deserve respect than be drawn in by evil a-holes because they are afraid to "offend them".
