Ohio | Only you can decide what to do with it. Outside looking in I would ask myself, did I receive an inheritance? Define ungrateful. So they just not want to come back and help or do they tell ya it’s stupid or something like that? Just because they don’t have an interest in it doesn’t mean they are ungrateful. They have there own interests in life and that may not include the farm. Doesn’t mean they still won’t appreciate an inheritance. Selling it now you will get smacked on taxes. If they truely have no interest, set up a trust, don’t someone young, and line them up to buy it after you’re gone. A way of controlling it but helping out a fellow farmer. And then the kids still get there money to. Situations would have to be bad to leave my kids out of the will or not give them an inheritance when I received one and help along the way. My advice would be to start conversations with them now. Just the kids. Leave there spouses out of it. Good luck. | |
