Marcellus, Mi | I should have phrased that different. I think they generally prefer the stall. I really don't believe it's increased mortalities and our numbers haven't really changed on psy. I believe management plays a big part in that.
It has increased our labor, not substantially but we are handling sows more frequently. We still use stalls to breed in and they remain there until around day 45 then get switched to pens.
We did a little experimenting to see if prop 12 would be worth the extra renovation and for us it seemed that pen breeding after being weaned and mixed give us a much higher return rate/ lower farrowing rate.
If you do have a sow abort from mixing into the pens and fighting, you may never know it until she returns. | |
