Lots of advice already to notill which I agree with, BUT, you need a planter setup properly with spiked closing wheels, good openers, adequate downpressure, etc. to be successful.

As for weed pressure if you notill I think you’ll be surprised how clean the field will be with that mat of organic matter to suppress weeds. If it’s got decent life to the soil you won’t see any evidence of sod by harvest. It is amazing how quickly sod breaks down on its own in these situations.

With all that said, I don’t understand the hardon for alfalfa in dry hay for beef cattle. Your best return might be to throw some fertilizer out there and make good grass hay off it. 2026 will likely be a rough year to raise soybeans, again.
