RR Valley, ND; MN native | The article says the family rented a farm from 1876 to 1879 when they moved to NE. US census thus won't have the family in IL as they missed the 1880 census. Also, being a renter, the plat maps won't help as they would show the land owner and not any tenants.
I've done a lot of genealogy in the past 15yrs and still find out new things on occasion, though I have not been as active as when I started. The latest thing is I think I may have found out what town/village in Austria one ancestor was from. I got all the towns/villages in Europe on my paternal side found out and I think this last one was the only one left on maternal side. For some, I have lineage going back a few generations in their ancestral towns before coming to the US in the 1800s.
