The rule of thumb was always to watch the CEC of your soils. Multiply by 10 and that's the number of pounds of N you soil can hold. If that's changed, someone will certainly correct me.

We have used ATS to stabilize 28% applied either pre-emerge or side-dress, but it's basically there to hold the N until it rains.
