| Did similar trip just in December. Went going down, dropped south at Dodge city from 56 to 54. 54 had a fair amount of traffic through Kansas and Oklahoma. Through texas, 54 picked up in the amount of truck traffic. Road was good through Kansas and Oklahoma, fair through texas. As 54 went into New Mexico, road was not "rough" but more wavy into Tucumcari. I have not done the 54/70 from Santa Rosa, but my father has multiple times in an auto only, no trailer. On the way down with trailer I went to Albuquerque and south on 25. I-25 very good and smooth, from Hatch cut across 26 over to I-10 at Deming. I-10 was very busy and rough until just prior to Tucson where we stopped.
Return trip, we had a stop to make in Santa Fe so used I-10, 26, I-25 to Santa Fe. From Santa Fe continued on I-25 (very good road) up to Springer and 412. Used 412 across to Clayton and Boise City. If going this way keep fuel topped off, not much for fuel stops between Santa Fe and Clayton. Continued on 56 to Dodge City and through.
In comparing the two routes, 54 more traffic and services with lesser quality road. 56 less traffic and services (especially in NM, once in OK and KS no issues), better road quality. | |
