Silage bales are 50% water, dry bales are 15% water. So, on a dry matter basis, that’s why the wet bales seem to get consumed faster. And the wet bales are more palatable.
Does the water affect the protein?
Most forage tests that I've seen, puts CP (and everything else) as a dry matter bases and sometimes stuff will be listed as fed basis too. But most folks use the dry matter basis for feed ration purposes anyhow.
