| I grew barley, safflower and oats, and grain hay for almost 40 years. After my dad retired I took over his cattle leases and grow a bit of hay.
The wine business took over most grain farming land. Today we have almost no infrastructure left for grain growing. I did tractor work for walnut orchards and vineyards for 15 years also.
Maybe old age, but very pessimistic about ag in California in general. There have always been new crops that are to be the next big thing, even when most don't turn out. The only thing I see promoted is agave (cactus used for making tequila), with alcohol consumption declining how will that work. The wine business is going fast. Darey, cotton, almonds, walnuts are all just treading water. Beef cattle is the only bright spot. | |
