Subject: RE: Harvest run for my daughter

NWIL
The time is now, crews are taking applications and filling crews as we type here. There are a good number of crews out there that will hire on females, and a good number that won't. The vast majority that do not aren't saying no because they have anything against a female running their equipment or scared of the job they do, but don't want to deal with the separate living quarters needed for both sexes that are needed. I met two harvesters, one in the states and one in Canada, that did their very best to only hire females to run their combines and guys to drive the trucks/carts. They knew their books and said at the end of the year the whole operation was much more successful in productivity and financially when girls ran the combines as by nature if something isn't right, they'll let it be known and rectified before turning into a big deal, not to mention that while they may not be running a combine at 100-105%, they'll maintain 95% all day long and not be continually stopped fixing sections/guards and other repairs brought about by running on the edge. Now they each said guys need to be in the semis and carts, as a more aggressive mindset is needed at times, kind of a put the right pedal down and don't look back sort of thing, such as in knarly approaches, mud, or hairy field roads.

If she is serious, its up to her to look through the internet, find some crews that look intriguing and follow the route that looks appealing to her (IE, what spots does she have on her list? Texas, OK, KS, CO, Dakotas, Montana, Canada, Arizona, Iowa??), and pick up the phone and talk at length with the owner. I could give several recommendations, but with some research on her part she'd likely come up with them herself.

I spent a lot of time on the harvest run before farming, and encourage a lot of folks that have any inclination to do it, to go for it! When my son hits that age, if he has desire for it, I'll be his biggest fan of doing it. I wanted to myself at the age of your daughter, but felt I needed to stay home and work here. Fortunately things aligned and I got to call myself a "cutter" for awhile, and thankfully I'm in a position of so happy to have experienced it instead of spending the rest of my years telling myself I sure wish I had.
