SW OH | My oldest brother is a retired professor of veterinariary medicine. When he was still working he was very accurate down to 30 days. This was when he would palate 200 cows a day. He had lots of practice. The bigger the fetus the easier it is. At around 75+ days it falls in front of the pelvic bone and is out of reach. From then on you pinch the uterine artery against the inside of the hip bone. The bigger the fetus, the bigger artery and more violent the pulse is.
Personally I can't find the fetus until 45-50 days. When it falls in front of the pelvis I can't find the buttons because my are is so big I can't get that far in. My vet is a younger female and uses an ultrasound. She's about 95% accurate in the 40-75 day range. From 75 on she is accurate on open or bred, but is often months off on calving date. My brother is not a fan of the ultrasound method. He shakes his head and says "kids".
