Hennepin, IL | What do pools have to do with anything? Picture a quarry. If more gravel leaves the quarry than comes in, its being mined. Now mining doesnt always have to be negative. If that ground barely raised grass before, produced good gravel that can be used, then turned into a lake, thats a win-win-win. Around here we'll see areas around hog lots that got manure for years and years and years that still show high to really high in P. Can those areas be mined? Sure. Some would argue they probably should be mined down to a normal range. You use cover crops, bios, etc to release nutrients. Great. Theres a lot of P&K tied up in the soil, but youre kidding yourself if you think its an unlimited supply. Maybe its 1000 years worth. I have no idea. Thats still a finite amount to me. Everyone argues about sustainability, but if you cant do a certain practice into perpetuity, its not sustainable by definition. | |
