| I farm land with a lot of rocks. It’s pretty obvious that people saying pick them, problem solved have no idea what true rock infested ground is like. I have gone to nothing more than a field cultivator on most of my rocky ground and that is to work in turkey litter. Otherwise it’s vertical till or no till. I scout my corn stubble in the fall and if there’s any rocks working their way up, I dig them out with the skid loader (or excavator for the healthy ones). After planting in the spring I drive the field and hand pick fist size or bigger. I cut a tad higher in those fields but don’t see much increase in field loss. A person can afford to leave a few beans behind for what combine repairs cost. On some ground that I have to fall chisel, I’ll pick with the skid loader in the fall, pick again after the field cultivator if needed and plant. I then hit the ground with a coil packer. I like that as the residue doesn’t blow off near as bad with the winds we get. Then I hand pick her the crop is up. When people ask me what I do in my spare time I tell them I pick rocks. I’m not kidding!
