Subject: RE: Questions about tile and rye

NW Ohio
Years ago, the tile companies pushed the sock tile around here (NW Ohio). It didn't last long as the sock filled up with fine sand particles and plugged the sock. The tile inside would be fine and clean. Dad tells a story of a guy whose tile was not working. It was a sock tile installed just a couple years prior. Dug up the tile, had water in the hole all around the tile and on top of the tile. The water wasn't going anywhere. Cut the tile open and the water disappeared. The sock was plugged up just a couple years after install. Again, that is a "here" thing. We install sand or Knife slot around here with real good luck. Not all sand slot is created equal though, if you have concerns ask for a sample of the tile. We have a few local companies around here and I do prefer one local company over the others for sand slot tile.

We occasionally have people get wheat roots as well as rye and other cover crop roots in tile. It has plugged up the tile on a few occasions but most times it doesn't seem to take long and the root ball has rotted out enough that it flushes out. We have dug some up and pulled the root ball out which is a pain, but tile that gets installed too deep doesn't drain as effectively either. You may find that the sandy-clay subsoil area will not drain well at all. It's hard sometimes to find that "Perfect" depth. With that being said, if you can stay out of that sandy/clay area and go a little deeper, it probably wouldn't negatively affect anything. Some of the worse fields to drain in our area is where that transition happens from sand to clay and you get that mixture. We almost prefer a good clay soil over that transition area.

If your installer does this for a living in your area, I'd tell you to trust him. He probably knows the area better than 99% of the people on here.
