Phrase: “mining the soil”
Synonym: “ raping the land”
Definition: description of farming practices given to a farmer you are on unfavorable terms with.

When the tenant was new and agreed to the raise in rent they are good stewards and efficient. When the tenant refuses to the increase in rental rate and the contract is terminated the practice they had been using will be referred to as “mining the soil”.

Also used to poach new farm ground away describing the current tenant’s practices.

Can be used as an excuse for poor yields usually assigned on the previous owner or tenant.
