You're young, got a long time to go. You have plenty of time to reap the benefits of every small improvement you make. You can make a lot of low cost improvements (rock) that will help you in years to come. Don't get caught in the spend no money mindset, make some money, spend some money. As you get older, it has to get easier, plan ahead and quit being tough (stupid). Lowest cost not the only way, be smart, not obstinate
