West Chazy, New York | We are planning to tile a 25 acre field next year. I'm still getting trees cleared out of the edges this year. Topsoil is about 15 inches of sandy loam, and the subsoil is sand with some gravel mixed in. Below that is sand with some clay. The AB horizon is very distinct as if someone drew a line. It was formed when this was an ancient lakebed during the ice age. Slope varies from almost flat to 20 percent. A mile or two to the west is the Adirondack mountains. Rain and snowmelt travel underground and well up through the sand in the he spring. The sand is so fine that the tile contractor plans to use tile with very fine slits in it. Now for the big question. Installation will be about 30 inches deep. Will we be limited as to what crops can be planted? Rye has a pretty good market here, but I have heard horror stories about roots plugging the lines. | |
